Successful Levy
Thanks in large part to Friends of the Library members, staff and board, Multnomah County voters approved the library levy on November 7th with 61% of voters saying Libraries Yes!
Measure 26-81 will keep our libraries open and provide the same hours, programs and services we rely on today. The levy will begin funding our libraries on July 1, 2007 and last until June 30th, 2012. In addition, the levy will provide operating funds for two planned libraries in underserved neighborhoods of North Portland and East County.
The actual vote tally of the election is just part of the success of this campaign. We were able to mobilize a tremendous amount of support to pass this levy. In fact:
- Over 500 supporters volunteered their time hosting house parties, talking to voters at farmers markets, participating in "Library Days" at their local library, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, writing letters to the editor, and so much more.
- Over 900 individuals, businesses and organizations made financial contributions to the campaign, totaling over $380,000.
- 2,500 households displayed their support for the library by putting up a lawn sign exclaiming "Libraries Yes!"
- The levy received the endorsement of The Oregonian, The Gresham Outlook, the Portland Tribune, the Portland Mercury, The Skanner, The Portland Observer, and Willamette Week.
- And for the first time, the campaign produced and ran a television ad promoting the importance of the library. We ran perhaps the most positive political ad on television that put forward a great message about why libraries are essential in our community.
